CEESD Creates Climate Change Awareness at International Summit of Professional Students Association in Sunyani

July 23 - The Center for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development (CEESD) was invited by the President of the Professional Students Association which is a branch of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) to participate in a climate change seminar as part of its 5th International Students Summit which was on the Theme: Global Climate Change: My Duty as a Professional in its Diminution. The session was chaired by the Director of CEESD, Mr Julius Ahiekpor who congratulated the organizers of the event for choosing a theme that is very relevant to our time, to Ghana and to entire international community, and announced that climate change awareness is a key area that CEESD is committing resources.

He said that although the invitation from the Association was received rather late and the Association was not a part of the Center’s key target groups (in its Strategic Business Plan), he approved the honouring of the invitation because the composition of the Association, having within its ranks trainees in Journalism (Radio, TV and Print) and other key professions who contribute to forming the perspectives of the citizenry, is one that provides very unique opportunity for carrying the message of awareness and action on Climate Change. In a presentation, Mr David Quansah of CEESD, explained the causes of climate change, provided some scientific data in evidence to the participants and explained the consequences of inaction on current and succeeding generations. Quoting from the first National Communications of the Environmental Protection Agency of Ghana (EPA) to the  United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and other publications of the Inter-Governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he warned of the consequences with regards to food security, water supply, health, energy and the recession of the Ghana’s coastal shorelines. He challenged the seminar participants to be agents of change and conduits for creating awareness of climate change and the need to pursue sustainable development.

The President of the Association Mr Joseph Sarpong, was grateful to CEESD for responding to the invitation at short notice and indicated his Association’s intentions to collaborate with CEESD in furtherance of the agenda of renewable energy and sustainable development.
