CEESD begins CDM project for Kumasi Abattoir

June 30 -  The Centre for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Development (CEESD) together with The Energy Centre (TEC) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with the management of Kumasi Abattoir to develop a Clean Development Mechanism project out of the enormous organic rich liquid waste generated at the Abattoir as a result of their operations.

Under the MOU CEESD will develop the Project Identification Notes (PIN) and seek a letter of no objection from EPA. CEESD will then further develop the Project Design Document (PDD) and register the project with the Intergovernmental Panel Convention on Climate Change (IPCCC) to seek buyers of Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). In developing the PIN and PDD CEESD together with TEC and the Management of Kumasi Abattoir will seek a technical partner who will implement the project.

At the signing ceremony, the Acting Director of TEC expressed his joy and pledged his full support to the successful execution of this project to make it the first registered CDM project in Ghana and hopefully open the door to other CDM projects in the country. The management of the Kumasi Abattoir on their part expressed the determination in fully supporting this project by making available every logistic and data needed in facilitating the process. On his part the Director of CEESD promised his outfit will work very hard to develop the PIN and PDD in record time to ensure the successful execution of this project and make it the first of its kind in Ghana.
